For all non-ranged combat, shields provide no bonuses to rolling, and they abide by the honor system, same as everything else.
For ranged combat, shields give those who hold them a passive buff to resisting ranged attacks. Additionally, players may choose to cower behind their shield for an emote cycle by spending a standard action, which gives them a greater modifier. These modifiers do not apply if the person shooting the ranged weapon is firing from a position that the shield is not facing (i.e., shooting them from behind or from above if the shield is facing forward). While cowering, your move speed is cut in half, to a minimum of 1. If you are shot at with a ranged weapon while using a shield, and win the check by a margin equal to or less than the protection modifier you have (in other words, if the shield is what causes you to not be hit), the projectile is considered to hit your shield. Your shield may also break if it takes enough damage. If you win the check by a factor greater than your protection modifier, the projectile is considered to have missed you. Shields count as armor, and thus you will receive movespeed penalties equivalent to your shield’s quality and type. For clarification on this, please consult the movement section of the wiki.
